Theakston Brewery

North Yorkshire

.T&R Theakston Ltd was founded in the town of Masham in rural North Yorkshire nearly 200 years ago and is famed for its superb quality craft-brewed ales in particular Theakston Old Peculier. Founded by Robert Theakston, the family today continues to control the business despite a challenging two-decade period when the company was taken over first by Matthew Brown in 1984 following an acrimonious family dispute and then in turn by Scottish & Newcastle plc, three years later. The great-great grandsons of Robert however, led by Simon Theakston, who first joined Theakstons in 1981, regained control over the family concern in 2003 in what is thought to be the only example of a family brewery buying itself back again from a major brewer.

With the company now safely back under family control, the business continues to thrive as more and more consumers seek out authentic, traditionally made, small batch ales of outstanding quality and character. In addition to cask ales, Theakston has a full range of keg, bottle and canned beers reflecting the wider variety of customer demand and taste. Ever mindful of the impact on the environment, Theakston has recently launched 100% recyclable packaging in the form of cans and cardboard grippers for their Old Peculier, Best Bitter and Barista Stout brands.

Theakston is one of the last independent brewers in Britain to employ full time coopers, making and repairing casks not only for the beer industry but also wine and spirits carrying on one of the most ancient of crafts.

Theakston are proud sponsors of the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival and are the official beer of the National Village Cricket Competition and the Nidderdale Cricket League, supporting culture and sport across their traditional customer base.
