Luigi Recchiuti completed the transition from seasoned home brewer to micro-brewery owner by opening Opperbacco, an independent birrificio situated in Italy’s Abruzzo region, just a few miles from the Adriatic Sea. Recchiuti had initially graduated with a degree in Agricultural Science from the world’s oldest university, Bologna, but found that his love of brewing beer grew too strong to ignore. And so Opperbacco was born. Using equipment he had designed himself, Recchiuti began experimenting with a few different styles - experimentation that led to the creation of signature brews like Triplipa, a remarkable Tripel and IPA fusion, EiPiEi, an American Pale Ale, and 4Punto 7, a fruity golden beer. Opperbacco’s beers showcase both Recchiuti’s flair and the unique larder of Abruzzo, with Gran Sasso spring water and local honey prominent in recipes along with spices like cardamom and coriander. Malts and hops, meanwhile, are sourced from all over the world. Luigi is supported by his wife, Arianna - who completed a thesis on artisanal beer while undertaking a media degree - and his trusty assistant, Marco.
