Abbeydale Brewery
South Yorkshire
Established in 1996, we blend creativity and innovation with heritage and tradition, reflecting these values across our extensive range of beers. Our house style could typically be described as pale and hoppy, led by our iconic cask ale, Moonshine - but that’s not all we do! We believe in the power of beer as a mechanism to bring people together, and strive to create a diverse and delicious range which covers the whole spectrum of beer drinkers.
We’ve always believed in giving our brewers freedom to make the beer they believe in, and as the beer world has evolved they’ve added all manner of beer styles from Double IPAs, Baltic Porters and Saisons to our repertoire, and lead brewer Jim Rangely has created our mixed fermentation program – the Funk Dungeon, named after the barrel store in which it began.
Sheffield is a former steel town which stubbornly and lovingly retains many elements of its industrial heritage. It’s a fiercely independent city with a strong identity and positive outlook. The Abbeydale Road area in which our brewery is based is an incredibly vibrant part of the city – we’re surrounded by a huge selection of other independent businesses, including our internationally award winning neighbours Forge Bakehouse, and many excellent bars and pubs. Sheffield also has a rich beer history, and still boasts one of the highest number of breweries per capita in the country. It’s a great beer drinking destination, with world famous pubs (particularly for their commitment to serving perfectly looked after cask ale) thriving alongside a huge number of modern beer bars.
Our brewery founder, Patrick Morton, is familiar with our city’s industrial past, with the Morton family business being in world-famous Sheffield cutlery for generations. Although this industry has declined over the last century, we like to think that the rise of Sheffield as a true brewing powerhouse reflects how our city has moved on, celebrating the past and using our experiences to create new life and industry on our own terms.
The whole history of Abbeydale Brewery is embracing the experience of doing things our own way, and this was very much evidenced that as of October 2024, we became 100% employee owned, alongside our pub, The Rising Sun in Nether Green, Sheffield under Sheffield Beerworks EOT Ltd.
